We had an exciting 25th Anniversary of the Men’s Member Guest Invitational. A full field of 168 players and plenty of good stuff to go with it.

We gave away a car, courtesy of Jay Lee’s Honda of Sumner, for a Closest to the Pin and the winner was Marc Sorel, Rand Neeves guest, who hit his tee shot in the 12-man shootout to 13’3”. It was amazing theatre with everyone surrounding the 7th green.

Canterwood Fit Tip of the Week: The Warm-Up

Canterwood Fit Tip of the Week: The Warm-Up

The purpose of a warm up is to raise your body's core temperature, take joints through a full range of motion, and activate the muscles you intend to train and use. In many ways the warm-up is just as important as the workout. A proper warm-up is going to allow you to exercise with a higher intensity to help make faster gains and also help prepare you physically and mentally for the workout to come.

Posting scores begins Friday, March 1st

Score Posting UpdateMarch 1st is the arrival of the "Active Season" for golf in the Northwest, which means we begin posting scores for handicap purposes on this date. Any scores that you posted on the computer in the golf shop since November of last year will disappear. If you posted on-line or at computers in warmer regions where there is no inactive season, those scores will not disappear and will be used in determining your handicap index. Handicap indexes will be recalculated twice a month on the 1st and the 15th.

Winter Rules Update

Because of the weather in the Pacific Northwest, the golf courses are not always in optimal shape in the spring and the fall. For that reason, there are many times that we end up playing Winter Rules (or playing the ball up). Last year, the Washington State Golf Association made changes to playing Winter Rules so that there was more consistency as to how they were applied. Basically, Winter Rules should be played as follows:
  • In closely mown areas (the fairways) the player may lift, clean and place the ball within 6 inches of where it lies no closer to the hole.
  • In all other areas, (the rough) the ball must be played as it lies and may not be lifted, cleaned or placed.
The thinking being that there should be some sort of punishment for not hitting the ball in the fairway. Certainly all players must follow these procedures when playing in competition and know that if you choose to play the ball up through the green during casual rounds, your handicap will be lower than it should be and this will hurt you in handicapped events.

Tips for Hybrids

Hybrids – Playability and Versatility

A hybrid is easier to hit from the fairway than a traditional long iron. It features a larger club head and a lower center of gravity, which allows you to hit higher shots that will land softly on the green without feeling like you have to help them up in the air. But versatility might be the hybrid's top selling point--it is a smart choice from the rough, the fairway bunker and even around the green. It's no wonder that hybrids are also called utility or rescue clubs.

From the RoughAverage golfers have a tough time in the rough with traditional long irons, because the tall grass tends to grab the hosel and cause misdirected shots. The hybrid, with its low center of gravity and broad sole, makes long shots from the rough easier. For crisp shots from the rough, play the ball 1 inch behind the center of your stance and strike the ball with a descending blow. Let the low center of gravity help the ball up in the air.

From the Fairway BunkerYour hybrid is an effective choice for fairway bunkers, because its soft leading edge is less likely to dig into the sand than the sharper edge of a traditional long iron. The key is to skim the sand with a sweeping blow and you do this by playing the ball 1-inch forward of the center of your stance. To prevent hitting too deeply into the sand, try to keep the leg movement to a minimum and swing as smoothly as you can.

From Around the GreenIf you choose a wedge for a shots on closely mown areas around the green, you run the risk of blading the ball over the green or having the club stick in the grass and coming up short of the pin. Your hybrid provides a safe alternative, and it is as simple as a putt. Use your putting grip, play the ball 1-inch back of the center of your stance and use your putting stroke.

TPI Philosophy of the swing

"We don't believe there is one way to swing a club; we believe there are an infinite number of ways to swing a club. But we do believe that there is one efficient way for all golfers to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do."

As a Professional Golf Instructor, I consistently encounter student's that want to improve and understand how to improve, but are stuck due to a physical limitation. This could be due to a health issue or injury, but more likely it is due to the unfortunate fact that the aging process can adversely effect your ability to swing a golf club.

Golf fitness training can be very beneficial  for everyone including mature golfers. Research shows that after the age of 25, the body looses muscle mass at approximately 1% per year.  If nothing is done to improve both strength and power output of the body by the time an individual is 50 years old they will have lost 25% of their muscle mass.  This loss of strength equates to the loss of stability in the golf swing affecting every phase of the swing.

This golf conditioning program is designed to improve golfers flexibility, balance, strength, muscular endurance and power.

Each week highlights a golf skill and swing fundamental while continuing to build a solid golf fitness foundation.

1. Balance and Mobility for Healthy Golf

Putting, Swing-Arch and Flat Target Wrist through Impact

2. Mobility and Stability for a Powerful Coil

Chipping, Take-away, Backswing and Loading the Club

3. Stability and Strength for Consistancy

4. Balance, Mobility,Stability and Strength Equals Power and Speed
